Forty-seven rooms

Rooms

The four types are named for where they sit in the building, and the beds are the same in all of them. What changes is the view, the ceiling and how far you carry your bag.

Rates and availability are handled by telephone or email. This site has no booking engine, so nothing you type here reserves a room.

An Altillo room: cypress-boarded walls and ceiling, a long skylight directly above the bed, white linen and a single pillow

Room type one

Altillo

Six rooms under the roof, lined floor to ridge in the same cypress the builders cut from the slope in 1948. Each one has a skylight set straight above the bed, which means that on a clear night you lie there looking at more stars than you were ready for, and on a snowy one you hear every flake land.

The ceiling slopes, and if you are tall you'll meet it at least once on the first evening. In return these are the quietest rooms in the building, with nobody above you and the stair stopping one floor down.

Room type two

Ventana Larga

Fourteen rooms on the first floor, set behind the long south elevation so that the lake fills the window from edge to edge. In the hour after sunrise the water turns the colour of hammered tin and the far shore lifts out of the mist in pieces. People who book these rooms tend to book them again.

These are the warmest rooms in the lodge, because the stone of the south wall holds the afternoon and gives it back at night, and they are the first to go, so ask early if you want one in February or in July.

  • Floorfirst, lift and stair
  • Bedone double or two singles
  • Bathbath with shower over
  • Windowfull width, over the lake
  • Good fora long stay, early risers

About the view

Four of the fourteen have a cypress directly in front of the glass. Ask and we'll tell you which four, and we won't put you in one of them without saying so first.

Noise

The hall is below these rooms. On a Saturday in winter you will hear the fire being made up and some conversation until about eleven. After that the building goes quiet.

Room type three

Balcón

Twelve rooms on the second floor with a balcony each, three paces wide, facing into the lenga trees on the east side of the building. In front of you here is wood, with birds in it, and in autumn a slope that turns the colour of rust for about three weeks and then drops its leaves all at once.

These are the rooms we give to guests travelling with a dog, by arrangement, because the back stair comes out near the boot store and the path into the woods.

  • Floorsecond, lift and stair

Balconies in winter

From June to September the balconies are cleared of snow every second morning. If yours has not been done and you want it done, say so at the desk and it will be seen to within the hour.

The boot store

Heated racks for skis, boards, boots and wet coats sit by the back door, one floor below these rooms. Everything dries overnight, so nothing needs to be left outside a room door in the corridor.

Room type four

Sobre la Terraza

Fifteen rooms on the west side, sitting directly over the terrace. In January the sun stays on that side of the building until nine in the evening, and these rooms hold the last of it long after the hall has gone cool. Each has a wide low window with a seat built into it, deep enough to sit sideways in with a book.

They are the rooms to ask for in summer and the ones to think twice about in high season if you go to bed early, because the terrace below is in use until the light goes.

Facts

  • How many15
  • Floorfirst and second, west wing
  • Bedone double or two singles
  • Bathshower, two have a bath
  • Windowwide, with a window seat
  • Good forlate sun, long summer evenings

Quiet hours

The terrace closes at ten in summer and the staff clear it without stacking chairs, which takes longer and makes less noise. Three of the fifteen sit at the far end away from the service door; ask for those if you want the quietest.

Asking for a room

Telephone or write and tell us what matters to you, whether that is the lake, a dog, a short walk from the lift, or no stairs at all. We'll look for the room that suits you before the one that happens to be free.
